Day 227 – Student Challenge04/23/2010
I’m loving the challenges or pledges that I have been signing up for lately. I get really motivated and determined. Well its spring and my students are catching summeritis. Webster defines summeritis, which is the same as senioritis, as low motivation and effort by students which results in tardiness, absences, and lower grades. I’ve even noticed that routines which have been established since the beginning of school year are being neglected or just forgotten. This increases my stress and I begin to turn into one of those teachers that yells and wears a frown. If I’m not having fun then nobody is having fun. So after a lack luster result on a little quiz today I knew I needed a fun way to motivated the kids to finish the year off strong. I could have given the stern YOU BETTER GET BUSY SPEACH or I could turn the next test into a challenge. A challenge that would motivate them and me.
So I pledged that for every correct answer on April 30’s 4 question geography test I will do one minute on the treadmill, elliptical or bike. I will break the workouts up over the weekend but I’ll get it done. The kids loved the idea. A few asked if they could get the questions early. Immediately I was told that I was going down. A number of students even wanted pictures as proof or wanted to go to the gym to taunt me.
I say bring it!
Anyone want to join me? You know do it for kids. 🙂
You can make your own pledge or just dedicate Friday’s workout to my students. I think they’d get a kick out of it.
