Day 227 – Student Challenge

I’m loving the challenges or pledges that I have been signing up for lately.  I get really motivated and determined.  Well its spring and my students are catching summeritis.  Webster defines summeritis, which is the same as senioritis, as low motivation and effort by students which results in tardiness, absences, and lower grades.  I’ve even noticed that routines which have been established since the beginning of school year are being neglected or just forgotten.  This increases my stress and I begin to turn into one of those teachers that yells and wears a frown.  If I’m not having fun then nobody is having fun.  So after a lack luster result on a little quiz today I knew I needed a fun way to motivated the kids to finish the year off strong.  I could have given the stern YOU BETTER GET BUSY SPEACH or I could turn the next test into a challenge.  A challenge that would motivate them and me.
So I pledged that for every correct answer on April 30’s 4 question geography test I will do one minute on the treadmill, elliptical or bike. I will break the workouts up over the weekend but I’ll get it done.   The kids loved the idea.  A few asked if they could get the questions early.  Immediately I was told that I was going down.  A number of students even wanted pictures as proof or wanted to go to the gym to taunt me.

I say bring it!

Anyone want to join me?  You know do it for kids. 🙂

You can make your own pledge or just dedicate Friday’s workout to my students. I think they’d get a kick out of it.

  1. What a great challenge! I love this! I’m totally in, too. I may have to break it up, but we’ll see. This is crazy. What a way to motivate your kids.

Just please don’t give them the questions first–I think I’d die with 2.5 hours of working out! 🙂

  2. I am in too! This will be fun!

  3. Haha, that is an awesome idea! I’ll dedicate my Friday workout to your kids! Put me down for 90 minutes of sweat! 🙂

  4. Thank you everyone. Eee-gads it’s a really long time. I hope the students do well but then again it is a really long time.

Check my Twitter roll on the side of my homepage on Friday for the time damage.

  5. That’s a really wonderful idea! The twitter roll isn’t showing up for me so I don’t know if the time damage has been posted yet! I want to know!

    • I’ll make sure to post as soon as I can on Friday.

  6. Such an awesomely creative idea!!! I love it! I’m doing Steve’s (265andCounting) workout pledge probably tomorrow, so I will dedicate that to your kids!

  7. […] him in my workout tonight. The reason it’s dedicated to Shelli’s kids? Well, she offered a challenge to her students (very creative, if you ask me!) and for every question they get right on the Geography test today, […]

  8. I definitely need help loosing weight. I’m way too fat right now. 😦 I already lost like 60 pounds but i still need to lose like 25 more. ive stayed the same weight since july but i cant find inspiration to start up again.

  9. What a great way to motivate your students.
